Purpose of the Survey
The Health eMotion Survey is the first phase of a larger project which aims to better understand how adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 use their mobile devices and social media to cope with life stressors.
It is known that students use mobile devices such as cell phones in order to connect with peers and access different types of information. The Health eMotion survey will ask questions about how students use their mobile devices, and how this affects their feelings about themselves and their relationship with their peers.
Information from the survey will be used to help mental health professionals and educators come up with better ways to make health information available to teenagers using mobile technology.
Topics Covered in the Survey
- Grade level
- Sexual identity
- Use of technology
- Social media use
- Physical activity
- Responses to different types of stress
- Unwanted sexual experiences from peers
- Whether the student has ever wanted to hurt themselves
The survey questions included in this survey have been extensively researched. While some topics listed may be considered sensitive, research has shown that questions like the ones being asked rarely make students feel upset or embarrassed. In the rare instances students did have uncomfortable feelings, it was found that those feelings rarely lasted long. That being said, the student may stop taking the survey at any time if they feel they cannot finish, and resources will be readily available if they express they feel like hurting themselves after.
The students responses will main completely anonymous. The student’s name WILL NOT be associated with any survey questions they answer. No one at the school will be able to see the student’s answers. No school or student will be mentioned by name in any resulting reports.
